Horse Racing-The 2000 Guineas and 1000 guineas Preview

2000 Guineas 3:10 Newmarket Saturday

Any Aiden O’Brien runner has to be respected given that he’s won this race three out of the last four years. He has the favourite Rip Van Winkle 10/3 and probable second favourite Master craftsman 5/1. Jockey Johnny Murtagh has plumped for Rip Van Winkle and he doesn’t get it wrong very often, so that looks a bit of a tip on its own. Both runners have solid claims and it would be no surprise to see the prize return to Ballydoyle.

Delegator who finished an eye catching fifth In the Dewhurst is 4/1 but could go off favourite or joint favourite. Trainer Brian Meehan has never trained a Classic winner and horses that have won the Craven don’t have a great record in this race.

Jim Bolger’s Gan Amhras has been well backed and is now 12/1 form 33/1. He has solid each/way claims and if any of the big three don’t run up to form then this fellow could take advantage.

Lord Shanakill finished second in the Dewhurst and at 20/1 we think he could provide some value. He may not win, but looks a good solid each/way chance.

Others we think are worth considering are Dewhurst third Finjaan 25/1 who is another place prospect and at a big price, On Our Way at 50/1 who could also make the frame for Henry Cecil

Our first four

1 Rip Van Winkle
3 Finjaan
3 Lord Shanakill
4 Delegator

1000 Guineas 3:15 Newmarket Sunday

This looks a pretty open affair if you discount favourite Rainbow View and that’s what we’re going to do… discount her. Four wins from four runs looks to set the standard but at 5/4 we think she may be a little too short to be backing and we’re going to look elsewhere for some each/way value instead.

There’s a strong Irish challenge and Shimah 18/1 and Cuis Ghaire 11/1 are the pick in our opinion. Both look set to run a decent race and if the favourite is to be beaten we think the latter might be the horse that does it.

Super Sleuth finished second in the Fred Darling and we’re convinced the extra distance will suit. At 33/1 we think she’s worth backing each/way. Penny’s gift finished not too far behind Cuis Ghaire in the Albany Stakes and we’re surprised she’s as big as 50/1 and she could run a decent race, although a place is probably the best she can hope for.

Our first three

1 Cuis Ghaire
2 Rainbow View
3 Super Sleuth
